Freedom Families Foundation provides financial assistance to qualifying active-duty military families who have completed an adoption. Our process is designed to be straightforward, confidential, and respectful of your family’s unique circumstances.

Freedom Families Foundation provides post-adoption assistance to eligible active-duty military families. Grants are available to qualifying service members from any branch of the Department of Defense, subject to the eligibility requirements below.

The adoptive household must include an eligible active-duty service member.

Freedom Families Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides financial assistance to qualifying active-duty military families following a completed adoption. Our goal is to help reduce the financial burden of adoption for families serving our country while increasing awareness of the unique challenges military families can face when building their families through adoption.

Grant assistance is available to qualifying active-duty members of any branch of the Department of Defense. The adoption must have become legally final within the previous 12 months, and applicants must be able to document eligible adoption-related expenses. The adoption must have been completed through a licensed adoption professional, attorney, or appropriate state child-welfare agency. Step-parent and kinship adoptions are not eligible under the current program.

No. Eligible adoptions may involve children of any age. We support qualifying domestic, foster-care, and international adoptions provided the adoption meets the foundation’s eligibility requirements.

Freedom Families Foundation provides post-adoption financial assistance for eligible adoption-related expenses. Depending on the circumstances, qualifying expenses may include home-study, agency, attorney, court, and other approved adoption costs. Grants are reimbursement-based and require documentation of eligible expenses.

Submitting an inquiry or application does not guarantee funding. Grant availability and award amounts depend on available donor support and overall program capacity.

You are welcome to submit a Grant Inquiry even if you are still considering or pursuing an adoption. Freedom Families Foundation grants are awarded after an adoption has become legally final, so families in the early stages will not yet be eligible for reimbursement. However, we are happy for military families to learn about the program in advance so they know assistance may be available later.

Freedom Families Foundation does not provide tax advice. Federal and state adoption-related tax rules can change, so families should consult a qualified tax professional or current IRS guidance regarding available adoption tax credits or deductions.

We aim to respond to Grant Inquiries as promptly as possible. Once a complete grant application and supporting documentation are received, applicants can generally expect a decision within 30 calendar days.

Because our grant program is specifically designed for active-duty military families, we require documentation confirming the applicant’s current military status. This helps us responsibly steward donor funds and ensure grants are awarded in accordance with the foundation’s eligibility requirements. We do not request access to personnel files or other unnecessary personal military information.

The full grant application may require documentation confirming active-duty military status, proof that the adoption has become legally final, and documentation of eligible adoption-related expenses. Applicants may also be asked to complete the foundation’s military-status or command-verification forms. We request only the information necessary to evaluate eligibility and document an award.

Yes. Eligible domestic and international adoptions may qualify, provided all program requirements are met and the adoption was completed through appropriately licensed professionals or recognized authorities.

In some circumstances, yes. An application that could not be approved because it was incomplete or submitted before all eligibility requirements were met may be reconsidered once the issue has been resolved. Applications that do not meet the foundation’s underlying eligibility requirements generally cannot be reconsidered unless the applicant’s circumstances materially change.
